Simply the Best

The name “Il Gattone” stuck with Bert for the rest of his life and his good friend, Ron Atkinson, never called him Bert but always “Il Gattone”.  Ron was on the ground staff at Wolves and actually rolled the pitch before the famous Wolves versus Honved game.

Charles Buchan also noted in his newspaper article that a white ball was used in the second half to aid the television coverage but that it made no difference to the Italians as they continued to display a brand of football that England could not match.

Another excellent cartoon, this time by Tom Webster, depicting Bert as an English hero like Winston Churchill
