Roman Gabriel remembers two Packer “greats”
Ray Nitschke and Willie Davis

I met Roman Gabriel at Clemson University before a Carolina Panthers game to pass on a message from Ray Nitschke.  Ray said that Roman had laid a hit on him in a game at Milwaukee County Stadium in a Packers v Rams game and that Roman was one of the first quarterbacks to start using weights.  For his part, Roman remembered many encounters with number 66 and it was usually himself who ended up on the seat of his pants.  It was at this meeting that I learned that Vince Lombardi was desperate to trade for Roman but George Allen, head coach of the LA Rams would not entertain the idea.
