England had received a severe setback when Neil Franklin who was the regular England centre half signed for Bogota in Columbia just before the team was due to fly to Rio.  This immediately excluded him from playing for England in the finals.  Bert thought that Neil was an incredible player and would be greatly missed as there was no obvious replacement.  At a later date Neil confided to Bert that it was a great mistake going to play in Columbia.
