When Bert decided to retire from football it was a heart wrenching decision but although he could have gone on for a while longer his family had to come first. Many footballers of his era had played for the love of the game, like Bert himself, but were not as fortunate to have a business to give them an income after football. Bert had business interests in Bilston and Wolverhampton which provided him with a living but they needed time and this was a problem when he went on an overseas tour. He also wanted to finish at the top and he felt that Wolves were the very best club in the world.
Bert had offers from other clubs but always felt he had made the right decision, he was after all “The Cat in Wolf’s Clothing”.
