Top 5 goal scorers in England: Mike Whalley’s choices

Goal scorers - my list will probably come in for some flak!

First of all, I think it only right that a certain John Goodall, of Preston North End, should be included - he scored 21 goals in 21 matches (ratio 1.00 goal per match) in that first ever season of the Football League, 1888-1889, finishing as top scorer. The history man.

Dixie Dean - 310 goals from 362 matches, ratio 0.86.

Jimmy Greaves - 357 goals from 516 matches, ratio 0.69

Steve Bloomer - 314 goals from 536 matches (ratio 0.59) between 1892 and 1910

Tommy Lawton - 260 goals in 433 league and cup matches in 14 full seasons - but his best years were lost because of World War 2.

Mike Whalley, Greaves School, no goals from one match, ratio 0.0., reward: cane from Mr Newsham.
