Anglo-Scottish select XI

This is something of a rarity on my website as it talks about a game that took place in June 2017 when Scotland played England at Hampden Park.

In a television interview in 1979 John Motson was destroyed by Brian Clough who suggested that Motson, Bob Wilson and Jimmy Hill should “shut it” and let the fans decide for themselves whether a match was good, bad or indifferent.

Motson still opens his mouth and he decided to select an Anglo-Scottish XI prior to the Scotland v England match at Hampden Park on June 10th, 2017.  Here is his selection and true to form he sits on the fence and selects six from England and five from Scotland in his modern 4-4-2 formation so he doesn’t upset anyone.

Jeff Powell from the Daily Mail got in on the act and picked his best which included seven from England and four from Scotland in another modern formation 3-4-3.

Mike Whalley, John “Cotton Picker” Townson, Keith Miller and Terry Ainsworth spent a raucous morning in Vincenzo’s Coffee House arguing and debating before coming up with their selections in a formation that they grew up with, 2-3-5.  Finally, Keith Miller’s father Sid added his choice and he saw all the players in his team as he is now 97 and going strong.

Looking at the seven teams and the number of times individuals have been selected results in the following team with times selected in brackets.  Although he is short of a true centre forward, Sid Miller, the manager, has decided to play the 2-3-5 formation.

Gordon Banks (3); George Cohen (2), Roger Byrne (3); Billy Wright (4), Neil Franklin (2), Duncan Edwards (5); Stan Matthews (4), Bobby Charlton (4), Denis Law (4), Jimmy Greaves (4), Tom Finney (6)

If it was possible for all these teams to compete against each other I think that Sid Miller’s XI would win the vote as the best.  He certainly qualifies as the best manager and Sid would also destroy Motson in a face-to-face discussion at the coffee morning gathering.
