Across Morecambe Bay to Cartmel

In the same season that the Flookburgh boys of Lower Holker won the North Lancs League Division I title their neighbours from Cartmel had joined the local league.  Cartmel & District had left the Ulverston League to join the North Lancs League and won Division III at the first time of asking by two points from Standfast Dyers & Printers.  They would get promoted into the top tier of the North Lancs League following season 1958-59 by finishing in 3rd place in Division II behind Bolton-le-Sands and Lancaster Amateurs.

Many of the photographs of Cartmel & District Football Club in my collection were kindly supplied by Derek Birch of Grange-over-Sands including the image of the wonderful “honour boards”.  I have never come across any other club in the North Lancs League who recorded their history in such a splendid fashion.

Around 2008 Ian Taylor recorded on film the number of trophies he won during 26 years’ service
as the goalkeeper of Cartmel, surely another North Lancashire League record
